The dawn of the Yacht-Master
More luxurious than the Submariner, sportier than the Datejust and dressier than the GMT-Master, this was the timepiece superyacht owners had been waiting for. While Rolex has long been a supporter of yachting and experimented with a Yacht-Master dial prototype based on the Cosmograph in the 1960s, it was not until the 1990s that the brand introduced a watch explicitly dedicated to the nautical lifestyle. The first model to launch the Yacht-Master collection was the Yacht-Master ref. 16628. Initially exclusively available in 18 carat yellow gold, it was clear from the start that Rolex wanted to position the Yacht-Master above the regular sports watch with plenty of style and flair.

The Rolex Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 and was the first Rolex specially designed for sailors. The rotating bezel together with the minute hand can be used as a chronometer for navigation purposes.
