Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 16518 with papers and black dial. The 40 mm yellow gold case combined with the black dial and rubber strap creates a particularly sporty yet elegant appearance. Inside beats the automatic Rolex caliber 4030, based on the Zenith El Primero and extensively modified by Rolex. The limited availability of the base movements supplied by Zenith restricted production of the automatic Daytona at the time and, in the late 1980s, gave rise to the then-new phenomenon of Rolex waiting lists and premiums on the secondary market. This unique history makes the so-called Zenith Daytonas highly desirable collector’s watches today.

The Racers Watch

Brandstory

Rolex

Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex is now the world's best-selling watch manufacturer. At a time when wristwatches were only worn by women as jewellery, Rolex established the history of the men's wristwatch by succeeding in building a wristwatch robust enough for everyday use. Today, Rolex is still the industry leader in the field of durable everyday watches and founded the concept of the Toolwatch. From the depths of the oceans to the heights of aviation, Rolex's professional models are valued by professionals and today enjoy exceptionally high collector's values.

Rocket Science

For a brief moment, I seriously considered starting this short article with a scientific treatise on the production of carbon fibers. However, given my rather limited abilities in the natural sciences during my school days, I immediately abandoned this idea and instead turned my attention to the things that move us all on a daily basis. Watches.

The return of the 80s

Everything comes back. At some point. Even my grandmother knew that and the more mature you become, the more you realise: damn, it really is like that. When Rolex presented the GMT-Master II as a yellow gold and bicolour version on a Jubilé bracelet last year, I immediately felt something like my own personal Werthers Echte moment. Only not with gold-wrapped caramel sweets, but with the watches I knew from my childhood. And so I still remember, as if it were yesterday, the picture of TV legend Horst Tappert smiling at me from the cover of a TV magazine with a gold GMT on a Jubilee bracelet.
