a new luxury lifestyle
More luxurious than the Submariner, sportier than the Datejust and dressier than the GMT-Master, this was the timepiece superyacht owners had been waiting for. While Rolex has long been a supporter of yachting and experimented with a Yacht-Master dial prototype based on the Cosmograph in the 1960s, it was not until the 1990s that the brand introduced a watch explicitly dedicated to the nautical lifestyle. The first model to launch the Yacht-Master collection was the Yacht-Master ref. 16628. Initially exclusively available in 18 carat yellow gold, it was clear from the start that Rolex wanted to position the Yacht-Master above the regular sports watch with plenty of style and flair.
A succesfull partnership
Rolex's official link with the sailing world began in 1958 when it signed a sponsorship agreement with the New York Yacht Club (NYYC), the driving force behind the oldest regatta in sailing - the America's Cup. Since then, Rolex has sponsored the world's most prestigious regattas and sailing races.
Brandstory
Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex is now the world's best-selling watch manufacturer. At a time when wristwatches were only worn by women as jewellery, Rolex established the history of the men's wristwatch by succeeding in building a wristwatch robust enough for everyday use. Today, Rolex is still the industry leader in the field of durable everyday watches and founded the concept of the Toolwatch. From the depths of the oceans to the heights of aviation, Rolex's professional models are valued by professionals and today enjoy exceptionally high collector's values.
